I received a notification in the software update section on my iPhone 4 recently. It might be because I opted to download the update but not install it via iTunes. My iPad has not been plugged in for a few days and has not asked if I want to update so I suspect that is how the iPhone knows I need to update. It would be cool if it just new by checking online. So many features of the iPhone do not require PC anymore so if it hasn’t already i suspect it will very soon.

Running the iOS 5.0.1 untethered update

Hello, what’s this? I received a notification in settings recently.

…On further investigation (Click General)…

Hmmm, Click, Software Update (click)…

I could see it was for the latest iOS 5.0.1 untethered update

I do not run an iPhone 4S so decided to update seeing as it wouldn’t mess with my battery.

I was, on the other hand, slightly shy of 50% battery life that the iOS 5.0.1 untethered update required.

The evidence is hard to dismiss

IOS 5.0.1 Update Makes iPhone 4S Battery Even Worse

After our recent post regarding the apple iOS 5.0.1 update on this site we found an article claiming the battery lengthening fix has actually caused some issues with the new iPhone 4s:

iOS 5.0.1 update makes iPhone 4S battery even worse

Apple’s iOS 5.0.1 update makes iPhone 4S battery even worse?

iOS 5.0.1 update makes iPhone 4S battery even worse

Has Apple’s iOS 5.0.1 update worsened the iPhone 4S battery bug? That’s the claim of some users online, but is there any truth to the assertions?

Apple’s newly released iOS 5.0.1 update – the one that was meant to fix the battery draining bugs present in iOS 5 – has reportedly made matters worse, according to online user forums.

Apple’s iOS 5 was quite an update and introduced a load of new functionality to Apple’s range of iDevices, such as new notifications, Newsstand, iCloud and integrated Twitter functionality.

As always, though, there were a few bugs inside the new platform. Chief among these was the battery-draining bug, which affected tens of thousands of iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 users.

Apple admitted iOS 5 had a battery-draining bug inside it, as well as a massive security hole, but maintained that both of these issues, along with all the other known bugs, would be taken care of via an update (the iOS 5.0.1 update).

Well, iOS 5.0.1 landed on Thursday but it doesn’t seem to have fixed everybody’s battery issues.

Here’s a collection of complaints from Apple’s user forums:

‘After upgrading to 5.0.1 my iPhone is draining the battery even faster! Anyone else seeing this problem?’

‘I can support this too.. After installing 5.01 i charged it up fully before going to bed and after 7 hrs just sitting there lost 79%, and have lost further 5% while logging in and typing this. Going to try a full back up and restore this eve.’

‘Before the 5.0.1 update I actually didn’t have any battery problems on my iPhone 4S. But thanks to this update I now seem to have one, too The phone was charging over night and I was already wondering that it displayed 98 per cent when I unplugged it this morning, normally it would display 100 per cent. And now after 20min of use (reading some news on the bus) and 1h 26min of standby, it is already down to 92 per cent.’

‘Yeah same here.. since it finish charging this morning at 4am or so when I turn the laptop off.. I’m at 80 percent now at 9am.. the scary part is that I have Siri and location services turned off, brightness setting at only 1/4..’

Our iPhone 4S was fully charged at 8:00am this morning. Now it’s at 81 per cent – that’s a 19 per cent reduction in three hours. All we’ve done is listen to some music, send a few emails and texts and browse a few web pages.

Could we be seeing iOS 5.0.2 soon? It’s beginning to look very likely that we will, especially if these complaints keep persisting.

Apple on Thursday released an update to iOS 5 that fixes a battery problem affecting certain iPhone users.

iOS 5.0.1 Update

According to Apples release notes, iOS 5.0.1 resolves four main issues: fixes bugs affecting battery life; adds multitasking gestures for original iPad; resolves bugs with documents in the cloud; and improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation.

The 44.6MB download is available now for those with an iPhone 3GS, 4, or 4S, an iPad or iPad 2, or iPod touch third and fourth generation. Those with iOS 5 can find it from their devices via Settings>General>Software Upate.

Reports of decreased iPhone battery life cropped up late last month in the wake of the iPhone 4S and iOS 5 releases. One user told the Guardian that he experienced a 10 percent drop every hour, and Apple engineers reportedly started contacting iPhone 4S owners about the “known issue” with its battery.

Apple confirmed the bug last week. “A small number of customers have reported lower than expected battery life on iOS 5 devices,” Apple said in a statement. “We have found a few bugs that are affecting battery life and we will release a software update to address those in a few weeks.

“Two beta versions of iOS 5.0.1 were then released to developers and Apple also provided it to those in the AppleSeed program, which provides test, pre-release software to real-world users.

iOS 5 Camera

Capture the moment at a moment’s notice.

Since your iPhone is always with you, it’s often the best way to capture those unexpected moments. That’s why you’ll love the new camera features in iOS 5. You can open the Camera app right from the Lock screen. Use grid lines, pinch-to-zoom gestures, and single-tap focus and exposure locks to compose a picture on the fly. Then press the volume-up button to snap your photo in the nick of time. If you have Photo Stream enabled in iCloud, your photos automatically download to all your other devices.

iOS 5 Newsstand

A custom newsstand for all your subscriptions.

Read all about it. All in one place. iOS 5 organizes your magazine and newspaper app subscriptions in Newsstand: a folder that lets you access your favorite publications quickly and easily. There’s also a new place on the App Store just for newspaper and magazine subscriptions. And you can get to it straight from Newsstand. New purchases go directly to your Newsstand folder. Then, as new issues become available, Newsstand automatically updates them in the background — complete with the latest covers. It’s kind of like having the paper delivered to your front door. Only better.

iMessage

iPad and iPod touch join the conversation.

With iMessage, we’ve created a new messaging service for all iOS 5 users. You can send unlimited text messages via Wi-Fi or 3G from your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch to anyone with one of those devices. iMessage is built into the Messages app, so you can send text, photos, videos, locations, and contacts. Keep everyone in the loop with group messaging. Track your messages with delivery receipts and optional read receipts, see when someone’s typing, and enjoy secure encryption for text messages. Even start a conversation on one of your iOS devices and pick up where you left off on another.

Send more than text

Send photos, videos, contacts, or locations.

See when they’re typing

Ellipsis points appear when someone’s responding.

Start here, finish there

Begin a conversation on one iOS device and pick it up on another.

A video was released recently for Siri on the iPhone 4. They even went as far as to publish a before video where the author claimed a slower version was his first attempt to move it to iPhone 4.

Note: in the video that the phone has 2 lines at the top on the sides (Similar to the 4, but this has lines on the bottom only). Well, this is an iPhone 4S feature and shows the video to be a hoax.

picture here shows 2 different iPhone 4s.

Shame really as I would love to get the Siri feature without having to upgrade. Perhaps the hackers will get this onto the iPhone 4 soon.
